Travis, I come to you with a question about Viggo and Bucket\'s "One Man\'s Meat." You recently auctioned this item, and the winner turned around and auctioned the same item (apparently he had 2) on eBay and sold it for $230+. Quite a profit. Buckethead fans at Saul\'s forum (buckethead.tk) were upset about this turn of events for several reasons. I won\'t go into all them here, but you can guess the main ones I\'m sure.

The idea of making this CD available for free download came up considering this is an out of print CD, the same way Blueprints and NTT are availble.

Has the time come that would make it all right to do this with "One Man\'s Meat"?

Thanks,
bri

Travis

Yes, I have had a number of emails from people upset about having bid on the CD and seeing it resold on ebay. The whole point of my auction was to give fans a shot at getting some rare things without getting soaked. If I were just interested in getting the most out of an item I would put it on ebay myself. I can\'t stop profiteering, for everybody interested in collectibles there is a small percentage willing to exploit that for whatever they can get, it\'s not illegal.
This is just one of a number of problems I have had with the auction and sad to say the auctions days are numbered. The only thing I can do is put the items on ebay myself at least the artists will see some of the stupid money people are willing to shell out.
I have the same problem with the CD store, so much so I started selling CD\'s on ebay for the buy it now price thats the same as the price we charge here about a year ago to try to stop the brain dead purchasing and profiting that some of these things generate. I can\'t say how frustrating it is to see my CD\'s for sale on ebay by me for $15.00 yet see at the very same time someone pay $30.00 for the same CD while my auction is running. I just don\'t get it, just a little looking around gets you the regular price.
You can\'t save people from themselves.
We are working on a new store that may help and I will continue to run a store on ebay at regular prices. These CD\'s are not hard to find, just a little Googleing and you can find them. I will continue to try to spread the word of where you can find this stuff without loosing an arm.
Unfortunately I\'m a musician and so the part of my brain that normally would be savvy about promotion is crowded out by the part that makes music. I\'m not sorry about that but at the same time I still believe in artists selling their own work and I worry now that the major record labels can\'t screw musicians there is just someone else who will move in and do it.

As far as One Man\'s Meat is concerned, it\'s not my call to make. This music is owned by Viggo. Some of the music that\'s on that CD is available on This, That and the other, the collection of songs from the out of print Viggo CD\'s. I know when  CD is not being distributed that\'s what drives the value of them up and also makes it tempting to just copy them. I would leave that up to each individual. I wouldn\'t like to see an organized distribution of out of print works, however, I\'ve spoken about this before, I hope if you do choose to copy an out of print CD that you seek out the artist and donate the $3.00 or $4.00 that that artist is loosing in royalties otherwise, it\'s shareware music. I know as well however that from experience, that that doesn\'t happen.

Travis, I totally understand what you\'re saying. I don\'t know why people pay more on eBay for things they can get for less through you. It\'s mind-boggling. For fans like myself, who have mouths to feed at home (three of them!!), getting my hands on the rare stuff you talk about is just a dream. Hell, I haven\'t even worked my way through all the CDs on your site yet, as I have to spread my purchases out through the year and wait for holidays and stuff for kind family members to buy them for me.

I think I speak for your fans when I say that we\'re glad you\'re focused on the musical part of your business and not getting bogged down with the details of eBay and auctions and promotion.

Thanks for the time you took to answer my question. I look forward to the next treasure you send our way.

Happy new year!
