Political and Social Discussions my ass. This is all left wing kookery. First of all let me say that I am a conservative, which more often than not prompts me to vote republican. Second I am also a long haired, pot smoking, athiest. All I have seen on this board is christian bashing and conspiracy theories run amok. When are you lefties gonna quit complaining and start coming up with REASONABLE solutions to problems. I know that most of you are gonna think im here flaming or inciting you but this post is just to inform you of how more than half (yes its been polled that most people in this country consider themselves conservative) of the population views you. Sure im not a big fan of the Patriot Act, or religious zealots, or any of the other things you Libs moan and bitch about on a daily basis but damn i dont let it effect my life so much that i become bitter.

gkg

after a careful examination of the current administration and their policies - what prompts you to think they are offering solutions?

I could care less how "more than half of the population views" me. Hell, I dont give a shit what 99.9
% of the population thinks.

With that attitude, we\'ll all be living in a Gestapo-Religous State in no time. ;)

wow... now I\'m confused... this is all \'chicken wing cookery\' !   :-[    ok, that was bad.
Well, if no one here cares what anyone else thinks then why are they posting what they think?  I think everyone cares what other people think about them and about what they think - even if they say they don\'t.

What do atheists believe?

What do atheists believe?

They believe in a disbelief in God.  (was this a real question?)  I feel this makes them just as stupid as they think Christians are because there\'s nothing out there that really tells them that there isn\'t a god.  Just because they don\'t believe in a higher power doesn\'t make them smarter.

My thought on the subject is, if you wanna be smart, agnosticism is the way to go.

Actually, spencer, I\'d like to go on record (as an atheist) to say that atheists question the need for belief as a concept, period. And have mostly decided not to believe in any hypothetical being or a lot of other "known facts" or "recognized truths".

Post-modern thinking would question the existence of any "truth" that can be "believed".

I agree with you that it\'s not possible either to say "there is a god" or "there isn\'t a god" with any credibility or hope of demonstrating proof. I choose not to acknowledge mythical beings or organized religious hierarchies in any way. Belief simply doesn\'t enter into it.

Probably waaaaaaaaaay OT.   ::)  JMO. And whatever other opinions may be out there, each of us is entitled to them.

Ah, valid points, but you must remember, the atheists I know are not like you.  They\'re jackass kids like me who think they\'re better than everyone else because they don\'t believe in "fairy tales."

You have an extensive reason for your beliefs, they don\'t other than "it\'s stupid to believe in god cuz there is none.  My parents don\'t let me stay out past midnight, but I do anyways because they\'re bible thumpers and I hate them."  Shit like that.

Funny story:  This one time, a person who was raised as an atheist his entire life says that I was brainwashed for having a strong belief in a higher power and an afterlife.  The funny part is the brainwashing.  It\'s actually somewhat ironic, because I\'ve never been to a church in my life or had formal religious training, but he\'s been brought up to think I did and to think I\'m stupid for doing so.

That\'s why i personally don\'t like atheists, it\'s because of the ones I know.  Again, there\'s a world I have yet to see, and lack of seeing it skews my opinion.

hi oldfolkie!

do you as an atheist beleive in good and bad then? or anything like that... good and evil, wrong and right?

:)
(real question - I\'m sincerely curious)

Point well taken, spencer! You\'ll have a chance to see more people & different views as time goes on.

svale, those are good questions, but as I said before, the term "belief" doesn\'t really enter into it. Using the terms good & bad &c really begs the questions "who is this good/bad for" and "how does this fit into established moral codes within the society I inhabit"? It\'s all relative to the person perceiving the situation, and their own particular background & biases. We all have \'em.

But if you\'re asking -- do I have a moral code? then the answer is yes.  I try to do the least possible harm to myself and others, as best I can determine it. I try not to judge without knowledge & understanding. I try to accept myself and others for what we each are. I resist, sometimes at personal risk, the attempts of those who would control me or others for their own ends.  I acknowledge that I\'m influenced by my upbringing & the overall culture I live in, too, so sometimes it\'s hard to live up to the code. It doesn\'t always march with accepted wisdom.

It\'s all very personal. And nobody\'s perfect, least of all me. But I don\'t have a need to postulate a hypothetical supreme being or join a hierarchical system to justify my existence or my actions, or to be a "moral" person.

Sorry for the pedantry. It\'s not always an easy topic to discuss.

Yeah, I find that I say the stupidest crap sometimes online, and realize that it\'s not the usual people i hang out with.  Therefore i have handfulls of stereotypes that are unjustly put together.

I\'ll learn as time goes on though.  I\'ve got a lot of time.
