First off I am a college student at  GVSU in michigan. My current writing professor is Sarah Dickerson. I would like to know the opinion of some of the users here, preferably travis, and D.O.D.  I plan on using these opinions in developing a paper for my writing class. So...on to my question.

Q: Which is a higher art form...music? or music put to video?

I have to say that I admire musicians and directors. But I believe music is the better form of art. Considering that the "Mainstream Videos" involve a bunch of nearly naked women dancing around with alot of colors and stuff happening. This is not to suggest that those things are not great by themselves, but when put to a song I enjoy it makes me wish I hadn\'t turned on the tv at all.

Q:Besides when was the last time any of the artists I frequent listen to put out a video that gets played front to back?

A:Never, sadly.

I blame MTV for this. They never show the videos I want to see. Even if they did they would only show a brief snippet of it. Popular music is bad. I am probably the last of the dying breed of rock and roll fans. I don\'t do the whole goth thing, I am not swayed by what the latest popular music genre is.

Q: Which is the higher art form, Music? or video put to music?

NEED REPLYS, GRADE DEPENDS ON IT!!!

Being a Child of the 80\'s I grew old with Headbanger\'s Ball with Ricki Rackman and fall of Hair Metal the Rise and Fall of Grunge, one thing Eye Candy, The Devil, Guitars, Ciggerettes, Drugs and Death, Drugs and Death, Chicks latching onto the coatails of the Dead.
Most of the Bands I like are Broke up or Dead, Reformed, Vibed wrong but Right in my eye.
The Video is just a tool to get kids to watch the Shinanagins of the they\'er Hero\'s, day to day life style.
MTV Now has gotten way outside it\'s self covering Politics, Infomershels, Sex, were does Blank live on Cribs, Sports, who Dead and many more.
Funny thing is I don\'t have My MTV anymore, I enjoyed it though.

When two art forms are  mixed together, visual and auditory  for example , one or the other suffers. Art in its pure form is more direct. However, think of all the combinations tha suceed... Ballet- music and dance. Opera- music and drama. The visual arts, painting is at its best when left alone. The final results are not in yet.however. . Im trying to mix painting with rock music... with questionable results.  DOD

Mark Popple is in the process of trying to combine painting and classical music - with interesting results...

one of the great joys of art and music is really the viewer/listener participation - your own imagination takes you places a video can\'t begin to capture; a visceral sensation is lacking.

ballets and operas are/were often created as a whole, and so they speak to and develop each other as you participate in the audience.  videos are rarely created in tendem with a song, but rather an after thought and i suspect many of them are driven only by the attention grabbing frames you mention, rather than an enriched development of the musical piece.
Peace.

music totally inspires art, and vice versa - but do the mediums blend well the OP wants to know... i don\'t know that they do that often - other than the basics DOD cited in his sage way.

Mark Popple is in SF - but he\'s English by birth i seem to recall.  his work is oil on canvas and just fantastic, no?  no show yet - these are works in progress - it\'s a long piece with like 18 movements if i recall correctly, so he\'ll be a busy boy for a while.
Peace.
