Can anyone give me an idea of finding a really good music theory book? i\'ve been playing for about 4-5 years now and i\'ve only had a few lessons. i only know a handful of scales and chords so this is somewhat limiting my music. and i also haven\'t read any music theory so i figured it\'s about time to. I just wanna know what you\'re opinions are and maybe you guys can push me in the right direction in some really good books

any help is greatly appreciated   ;)

There are a ton of scale and chord books available, but most books over do it (imo) i don\'t think you would ever use a book that contained 5000 chords (maybe im wrong) anyway i use the Guitar Case Chord and Scale books they are easy to read and in color with pictures. I\'m doing 3 note per string scales at the moment for 3 hr\'s a day using alternate picking..and i can tell that it is really helping me get better. I have totally put aside learning songs for now. Oh\' and use a metronome! and get any Paul Gilbert training dvd out (those are my secret weapons)  his new one" Silence followed by a deafing roar  is really good ..Paul G. is funny as hell and makes you wanna play(for me anyway)

Good luck !

thanks man, i really dig the PG dvd\'s he\'s a pretty funny guy, and a great teacher ;D I\'m thinking about getting the John Pertrucci Rock Discipline DVD cuz it teaches chords, how to use a metronome, scales, and a lot more. Have you seen that one?

Yeah...the John Pertrucci  dvd is great to, only it\'s $50 :( The Paul Gilbert dvds are around $20. and they have them all for rent at Netflicks........ which is way cool. John Pertrucci  starts the dvd out with hand stretches and other warms ups which is kinda different, but as far as his other stuff goes he really didn\'t keep my interest for very long...i need comic relief to keep me focused i guess.  ;D

do the paul dvds actually have different licks and styles to learn though or is it just variations on techniques that he taught in previous dvds?

Hi!

I hate books with loads of chords, impossible to search through. If I am looking for new chords, or how chords I invent would be named or transposed etc. I always use the website www.chordbook.com . It can be very helpful!
