At the end of July, we at MOD Technologies are initiating a sub-label of sorts - M.O.D. Technologies Digital: Incunabula Series. As the title indicates, it will be digital format only. The intent is for Bill to bring live recordings out as well as delve into his archive for tracks that have probably never been heard outside of the performers when they were made. First two releases on July 29th will be the two duo sets from Bill's week at The Stone here in NYC in April. Bill and Milford Graves and Bill and Wadada Leo Smith. OUTSTANDING shows. The end of August will bring the next two releases, which are both digital singles. Bill and DJ Krush and PRAXIS feat. Rammellzee. It's a short unreleased track, but features the core group as well as John Zorn.

All releases will be available through the normal digital outlets as well as direct from us (http://www.mod-technologies.com) in hi quality MP3 and FLAC formats.

Yes, it was pretty bad ass. I've been following all three artists for years and seeing them improv together was a real treat. The set was only 45m though.

Much better than the original Bladerunner shows back in '99/'00 (which also had Frith in the mix). Lombardo's come a long way. We talked after the show and he spoke a lot about how much more he's listened to and studied in the last 10 or 15 years. It really shows. He was phenomenal. Bill had been very curious to see how it would all go down leading up to the initial gig in Australia, and when he came back he was very happy with the gig as well as how much Lombardo's grown.

Hopefully they'll get into a studio one day, but aside from scheduling, a lot of that will likely be up to Zorn as it's more or less his project.

Yep. It has been discussed in the past. (do a search to follow that thread)
With replies of who would buy a vinyl. If memory serves, I think the cost effect and minimum cut for a vinyl release
wasn't practical. But hey, things could change if interest is stirred up again. I would purchase a vinyl release also.

been quite a while since i checked in...I would think that those are very major factors since vinyl is still very niche (though these days CDs are more and more too!). We (MOD Technologies) have been selective about vinyl. It's really dependent partially on the release itself - both vibe and reception. Praxis made sense. Done right with a good gauge on possible sales helps to at least determine break even. Also depends on how far you'll go also...we decided on a higher quality pressing (45RPM on two slabs instead of one 33 1/3) and full-on art-work. Not always a practical choice though.

Just in case it isn't said, you guys did a great job on this one. Still curious as to why I got mine on like, the 15th, but no complaints here.  8)

cool...thanks.

of April? Well...originally this and the Lee Perry vinyl were to be out April 2. That's a date generally used to make sure it's available at any retailers who stock it. We had to push back a little bit to make sure it was perfected. Redeye settled on April 30th, but would naturally have stock earlier - in this case much earlier since we couldn't quite make April 2 but were essentially ready. Sometimes they shoot for pre-orders to arrive ON the release date, sometimes they're nice and shoot it out early when they have stock.

FWIW - I don't have my actual copy yet, but it was noted here that it was at 33 1/3. It should be 2 LPs at 45 RPM.

Either way, you got it! Enjoy. Bill and those involved are trying to do limited vinyl where it makes sense as there is a demand there as long as the conditions are right. And all involved prefer to spend a little extra to make it something nice instead of a cheap and flimsy POS. heh.

I sent a MSG on their contact us link about the LP pre-order.
Waiting for reply.
Will post the reply here.

I apologize for this. Our distributor is not always great at making timely changes. Plus these recent releases kept getting shifted for a variety of reasons on our end. I'll try and stay on top of them better.

Regardless, as you can see, it was finally released on April 30.

I was unaware of this one. I love Praxis.

I hope you all enjoy it. It's pressed on 2 nice slabs of vinyl at 45 RPM for the best quality we could get, hence the slightly higher (19.99) price point.

for those that don't know, Amazon and the like have it or you can get it from us direct through our store at http://www.mod-technologies.com

Lee Scratch Perry's "Rise Again" gets this treatment on May 28th and the new Method of Defiance released on that same day (Nahariama featuring Laswell, Bernie Worrell, DJ Krush and others) will be released on CD and vinyl. Bill and the whole crew want to be able to do this (vinyl) where it makes sense, so hopefully we'll be getting you more in the future.

Purchase of vinyl gets you a download code as well.

...and of course, life happens. due to unforseen circumstances (and wanting the product to be just right) we've had to push off the vinyl until April 30. Pre-orders are avaliable through our website though http://www.mod-technologies.com

Still on track for next Tuesday April 2. Profanation and Lee 'Scratch' Perry's "Rise Again" on vinyl. Pre-orders are all up on the usual retail sites, or you can get it direct http://www.mod-technologies.com

$19.99, BUT, both will be 2 high quality slabs of vinyl. It could be done cheaper but quality would suffer as would packaging (similar to Garrison Hawk's album, which I have to say is an outstanding bit of vinyl in every way) Due to time constraints, the Praxis release will NOT have the two live tracks that we included on the CD re-issue, but the rest remains. Download code also supplied for the release (both albums - the Lee Perry release download will also get you a new track not on the album itself).

I'd definitely be interested in Transmutaion on vinyl. I have a cd and I had a cassette, so why not!? I'd like to see a bigger version of James Koehnline's collage on the cover, plus whatever else in included. I wonder if it will have any mix enhancements or if Bill Laswell is interested in revisiting it in the first place. :)

where are you guys getting Transmutation from? This is about "Profanation"! haha.

(edit) - I see the confusion....I didn't mean "first Praxis on vinyl" as in the first ALBUM is going to be on vinyl. I meant it as - "this is the first Praxis album to appear on vinyl".  Only "1984" which has sometimes been credited to Praxis has seen a vinyl issue, but that's not truly Praxis.

All the Axiom/Island releases reside with Polygram and not with Bill unfortunately. An Affiliate of Polygram did release a stellar 180g version of Hallucination Engine last year though. Bill liked the job they did and is hoping maybe they will pull more from the Axiom catalog, though he of course has no say in that...

FWIW - I'd love to have Transmutation on vinyl!

Ha! Okay, thanks for the clarification!. I spent some time clicking through the site and didn't see anything about Transmutation on vinyl, so I was a little bit confused. I totally get it now, though. I still have the cd longbox for Transmutation around here somewhere, it's pretty rad. Not as awesome as a vinyl album cover, though.  :) Thanks for the head's up. You do great work archiving Laswell and associates music. Maybe someday Universal or whomever will see to it and get it done.

Thanks...honestly I don't think Polygram cares one bit unless they think it benefits their bottom line!

Giacomo Bruzzo (also of RareNoise) has been a huge part of getting MOD Technologies up and running. Things will be picking up this year and there are some great things already in the can for release. The label really is shaping up to at least be the successor to Axiom.

You are talking about a re-release of the 2008 album, right? No new material !?

The album was re-released on CD already by us. This will be the vinyl version of that. But essentially, correct. Nothing new. Just something for the vinyl lovers. First Praxis on vinyl too, FWIW.

As usual, release date is subject to change, but April 2 is the planned release date for Praxis' "Profanation" on vinyl (along with the Scratch Perry album "Rise Again") from Laswell's MOD Technologies label.

That's about the best you'll get in regard to Praxis these days. Not 100% but I believe we will have a download code included as we did with the Garrison Hawk vinyl so that purchasers may download a digital copy of the release as well.

what is a "record store"?

;D

can't tell you all that much, but there is the possibility of a new collaboration with Laswell in the near future. Not Praxis - something completely new and hopefully a bit different. I'll post more here when/if things move along as planned and when I'm allowed to announce it.

Without going into a ton of detail...

Subharmonic/Strata was a project that Laswell set up with John Matarazzo (I will not get into his er...qualities as a person), who at one point purchased the entire Celluloid Records catalog (where Laswell was somewhat of an in-house producer in the '80s) and reissued and licensed it to death, often in shit quality pressings. If I recall correctly, way back when, Bill told me he had all the masters. Subharmonic was a cash and carry proposition essentially. Bill got money upfront, he gave them albums, but kept all recordings.

Any re-issues are dubious in nature and likely quality (I'll point to the clusterfuck of a reissue of Sacrifist that contained Lightnin' Rods "Hustlers Convention"). Matarazzo I believe passed away, but I would not doubt that associates would still try and cash in on these things (or even likely he 'sold' someone the catalog). Much like with Celluloid, I would doubt any of the musicians invloved receive any money. I think at one time or another very recently I've seen reissue dates for other Subharmonic/Strata releases. So, beware. As far as Strata goes you're better off getting the original copy. At least since no money goes to Buckethead anyway, no one else but the seller will benefit.

As far as I know, since we're focusing fairly heavily on MOD Technologies and folding all of Bill's doings into that, I don't think any of those releases are planned for re-issue through Bill. Not that I'm sure it couldn't be done if someone wanted to take control on their own and Bill and Buckethead were cool with it.
