I might grab those files and have a play...

+1 for the DAW neutral approach. The way you do it, with the audio files and the track maps is just fine. I\'m using Cubase BTW (just about to upgrade to version 6).

QuoteMy  sonic ideal is a CD you  sit on the couch between two speakers and crank and enjoy the resulting endorphins.

Well said - That\'s how it should be! And for that we need dynamics, tonal balance and no clipping (in addition to excellent music...).

There is also the issue with brickwall limiting and clipping that it may cause hearing damage. It\'s a bit like running your car engine at redline all the time - it\'s likely to blow up in a short time. The hearing fatigue you get from such recordings should serve as a due warning.

For those who want to know more about the loudness war, check out this wiki article.

Quote...There is no right way to mix a record.
That\'s true, but there are bad and good ways IMO...  I\'m happy to report that none of the Buckethead/Thanatopsis CD from you have any \'faults\' as I see (hear!) it. Some are quite hot, but it seems that you\'re not fighting in the front lines of the Loudness Wars, thankfully. What we have fits the music; powerful sound, but still with some dynamics, and no clipping madhouse. I\'m a satisfied customer w.r.t. mixing and mastering - and I dig your playing too. Good work Travis! :)

I used to be a bit of a hi-fi freak, but gave that up years ago. I\'ll always have a really good sounding stereo system in my living room, though (current boxes: Tandberg CD player, Adcom and Accuphase amps, Seas and Kef speakers, etc). Sound quality is very important to me, so no mp3\'s if I can help it. My entertainment PC is hooked up to a mixer with a good DAC. The mixer goes straight to the stereo. Thus I can enjoy all kinds of music from all kinds of sources, including playing guitars and keys, in my living room with good sound.

I play CD\'s in my car, which has a Bose sound system.

Headphones are only used in studio and research situations.

I don\'t use any kind of portable player (If I did, it would have to support WAV/FLAC and I\'d have to wear big dorky Beyerdynamic headphones :D)

The bottom line is using high quality sound, and always taking very good care of those fragile organs called ears!

Say, if a tour with Big B, Travis, Brain and Dan Monti was announced, I might just catch a gig or three...  ;D
There\'s a problem though; the chances of a European gig/tour are microscopic I fear...(?)

Quote...when I searched "Buckethead" and my life changed..
I had a similar experience. If it weren\'t for the Toob, I\'d never known about him. Somehow I stumbled upon the Big B there, and was utterly fascinated by this enigmatic guitar magician. Now I have a dozen or so CDs, mostly ordered from TDRS Music.

BTW: something tells me that this thread has one or more missing post at the start...?

I say SCORE, DisembodiedLoaf! :)

Is it a notch in the back of the CD jewel case? When I worked some for a record store some 20 years back, that meant it was a promotional copy.

QuoteAny idea where I can buy it? It needs to have shipping to the UK... And not be really expensive.
There are several cheap ones available for international shipping through Amazon Marketplace here.

Edit to add: I got mine from "gohastings" (in the list above), they have one right now for $11.62. Also, "FOT RECORDS" have one for $11.63. Hurry up and grab one, mate!

The big B puts the Fun into music, making me want to pick up my guitar and play. He makes some absolutely amazing stuff, and also some beautiful music that can make a grown man weep.

Him being a bit of a quirky non-conformist, and dare I say an underdog in the popularity stakes, adds to the appeal - I like to root for the underdog. I\'m glad I discovered him and my fellow BH appreciators. It all seem to radiate fun & empathy instead of the pretentious and cynical BS that is so widespread...
