Title: how much should I donate per cd??
Post by: Duckhead on January 07, 2009, 04:19:43 PM
I have bought lots of cds direct from TDRS but I can\'t always afford to buy my cds here. I recently bought Gorgone for $5.24, and sealed Unison for about $7 bucks on ebay. Got PO for $8 at the used cd store. I can list other examples.

When I buy a "in print" cd like these I know that Travis, Bucket and the other musicians don\'t make a dime so how should I make this up? I read back in the 80\'s that Michael Jackson was able to negotiate that he got $1 per cd sold, prior to that it was pennies. Is a buck a cd still the standard? I assume that a Indy artist probably makes more per cd than they would from a major record label but probably wont sell as many cds. So to keep in mind my lacking funds and being frugal, what should I donate per cd? $2??

Also, when I buy an OOP cd like SOTS or DOTR, should I also donate?? or because it is OOP does that mean the artist made all the money they expected from that cd already??

I don\'t think you have done anything wrong by buying the CD from other sources, so it really is up to you how much to donate.  Personally, I downloaded Albino Slug before it was released on here because I couldn\'t get to a show to buy it.  It was the first time I had ever done that.  To assuage my guilt, I donated $10 to Buckethead on here.  then I bought the actual CD as soon as it came out.  I figured that way Buckethead got money for me listening to the CD before I bought it and then everyone else involved in making the CD got theirs when I bought it.  Anyway, I guess I am just saying do what feels right to you.
