Title: Review: From The Coop
Post by: eggman90 on March 20, 2008, 09:34:24 AM
Greetings all, enjoy! (or use as a sleeping aid).

I've been away on business, and have not had time to pitch in with my review, so here goes....

It seems as there is a time machine parked outside in back of Jas Obrecht's house. It might even be called the Avabella Express. With the release of From The Coop, Buckethead and his music now transcend time. Just when you are digesting Buckethead's latest release, the Avabella time machine brings us back to the work of the embryonic Young Buckethead. Those of you who have watched the pair of previously-released Young Buckethead DVDs know that Buckethead was already on his chosen path, even back then (if you haven't experienced those DVDs yet, go out and buy them right now). While listening to this new-old Buckethead release, you can almost imagine the wheels turning in his head, laying down beats, assembling the songs, crafting the structures. Maybe he was sitting on his bed or on a little chair in the basement, dubbing multiple tape tracks on what was then the portable analog recording gear of the day. For those of you who are not musicians, you must understand that instrumental music minus vocals is more difficult to compose, since there is no chorus, bridge, chorus reference point. Even at this early age, Buckethead's music was taking ninety degree turns. It's like the mad young scientist opened his notebook, allowing us all to take a peek. Who hasn't been locked into one of Buckethead's monster riffs, grooving along with the headphones, only to get yanked out of it and steered down a totally different path, like a roller coaster ride? From this perspective, From The Coop can be considered the seed that spawned into the colossal library that now makes up Buckethead's musical body of work. It's no wonder Jas Obrecht was impressed and smart enough to know that this guy was special.

When viewing the amazing backyard footage from the Young Buckethead DVD set, it is clearly apparent Buckethead knew what he was doing at such an early age. How many of us waste years trying to figure out what we want to be doing with ourselves in the future? Think about it-what teenager gets up one day and decides that they are going to speak through their music, while wearing a KFC bucket and plastic white mask? Not necessarily formulaic, one would agree, and extremely risky by today's societal standards. Additionally, imagine the focus and dedication required to set forth on this musical journey and stay true to the vision. Mind-boggling. It's either extreme brilliance, a massive lucky accident, or a combination of both that has propelled Buckethead as a force in the musical underground, briefly surfacing in the mainstream with Guns 'N Roses and the song Jordan in the Guitar Hero series of electronic games.

On From The Coop, you can actually hear Buckethead's musical influences surface in some of the songs. And that's the only similarity. He takes those influences and turns them inside out and bends them into a noodle, all the while applying what would become his personal signature stamp. The music stands up quite well on it's own legs against the backdrop of the former and current crop of faceless shredders of the day. Ironic that many of those shredders appear faceless still today, while Buckethead wears only one face-the one we remember.

From The Coop predates even the seminal Blueprints, as an on-ramp to the Buckethead thrill-ride released over almost the past twenty years. The production and sound quality are worthy of release, and allow the listener to fully enjoy the arrangements and guitar histrionics.

This is a must-have not for just Buckethead completists, but for anyone that wants to dig deeper and understand the mystique that is Buckethead. This is definitely the ink on the tickets that are distributed for admission to the rides at Bucketheadland.
