Title: Original Buckethead painting
Post by: misha on September 21, 2007, 04:27:32 PM
Hi Travis,

Just curious if the Buckethead painting originals will be ever sold or auctioned off? Any plans? Would love to get a painting by Buckethead!

Thanks,

Michael

Wouldn\'t count on it, I imagine BH will keep them... but if they do auction off you can guarantee it will be for a high price!!!

I was just at an art galery the other day where a painting caught my eye.  It was a portrait of Jimi Hendrix done by Grace Slick.  I think it was going for $2000.  There was another of Jerry Garcia that had a price tag of $5,000.  REally beautiful paintings.  I would have thought they would have sold for much more.  Considering the dealer has at least a 100% market up, Grace probably only made between $500 and $1000 for the Hendrix painting.

Too many variables go into the pricing of art.  Obviously it is mostly based on demand.  It would be interesting to see a couple of the Big Bucket\'s originals go up for auction.

are you certain that they were original paintings and not giclee prints?  giclee are often on canvas and give a similar appearance to original paintings.  you have to be very careful when you\'re looking at buying art in certain situations.  if you look at this website you\'ll see pieces by Grace Slick - and they sell below 10k - BUT - several of them are "Original mixed media acrylic painting on giclee canvas."  this means that a PRINT of her painting has been printed onto the canvas, and then various media has been applied to give it a more \'handpainted look\'.

as far as galleries go, most of them don\'t charge more than 60% of the gross, in my experience, and someone with a strong market, or at a lesser known gallery, can often get a deal under 50%, often as low as 30%.  one has to price their work accordingly.

it would be terrific to see BH sell is paintings - maybe at auction for some noble cause?  perhaps old age homes for one legged combless roosters?    ::)

Travis has already auctioned off two of Bucket\'s paintings here so it is a possibility (I\'m sure he\'ll let us know eventually whether it\'s going to happen one way or the other). They were bought by Geranyl and xenergyx, two nice folks over at the buckethead.tk forum. That\'s the great thing about Travis auctioning them here - the paintings are proudly owned by two Buckethead fans and have stayed in the Buckethead community. I have awful visions of what would happen if they ended up on eBay, I can see them just sat in someone\'s closet, totally unappreciated, while they wait to cash in on the next time there\'s a surge of interest in Bucket.

I really hope the originals do get auctioned, I didn\'t have the funds to join in the bidding last time and would love an original too.

But thats what happens when things are for sale i guess anyone can get it. I\'m just glad Buckethead means the world to me and just enjoy being a fan. ;D
