Title: Let me be the first
Post by: oldfolkie on November 08, 2006, 04:54:18 PM
to congratulate our cousins to the South on the recent vote for change. I hope that this means that many of the negative internal and external policies can be reversed.

Good luck to you all!  ;D

I too would also like to congratulate the Dems on their win. I\'m such a huge fan of democracy and my love for America (and myself) doesnt hinge on what political party has power. I\'d also like to make a few observations of the aftermath of the elections, mainly by the dinosouar media, and get some reactions to them. I can remember as far back as 2000, then 02,and 04 just days after those elections the media ran a plethora of stories about "what do the Dems have to do to regain power" this election cycle I have yet to see one story on how the Repubs can win it back. Do any of you think that media outlets such as CNN, NY Times, ABC, CBS, NBC are glad the Dems won? The thing I find most troubling is that there were 4 races that involved black candidates running against whites. Michael Steele(R) Maryland Senate, Lynn Swann(R) Governor Pennsylvania, Ken Blackwell(R) Governor Ohio, And Harold Ford Jr.(D) Senate Tennessee. All 4 lost their bid for office and according to Dems I\'ve talked to and posts I\'ve read on boards the only one who lost due to racism was the Democrat which leads me to wonder does a black man lose his ethnicity when he joins the republican party? GKG I quoted you specifically cause your posts always make me laugh and I\'d like to ask you to respond to a few questions. Now that the party you feel can better solve americas issues is in power how would you like to see such problems such as illegal immigration, the terrorist threat by radical islamists, and soaring health care costs solved. Please give specific answers.

Unfortunately, at the moment it is going to be tough enough simply cleaning up the messes that were created while our balanced power system was running under haywire conditions. Face it, our system works best when there are competing voices in positions of power NOT when we have a single party that can rule as it sees fit. MHOFWIW.

So, you are saying the \'Founding Fathers\' planned on having a single all powerful voice running the government?

QuoteOldfolkie, I was wondering where you went.  Did you do the novel writing thing again?
I\'ve been away part of the time & swamped at work the rest, buswolley. I started a novel again but it won\'t get done this November. It got hijacked by a cold & more of that pesky work.  ;)

Let\'s see now, if I had a vote (and I don\'t, not being an American citizen  :P) I\'d want to reverse the recent abrogation of my Constitution & civil rights, dismantle the crypto-fascist organization "Department of Homeland Security" into its component parts (some of which were actually doing some good for USAmericans, in their former incarnations, like FEMA), and follow the money that\'s been going to the "war on terrorism" to see just exactly where it has been going. I\'d want to subpoena the "Commander in Chief" and the "President of the Senate" and the outgoing "Secretary of Defense" as part of an investigation into the Iraq war. Just to be getting on with. (Not that I think they\'d have any more compunction about lying under oath than they did without...or wait, isn\'t the oath of office a kind of oath that should require you to tell the populace the truth? hmm) Of course, if I could make better use of the money than bombing Iraqui civilians I\'d be delighted. By spending it on things like health care, education, infrastructure...you know, the "public good"?

To be fair, right now I want to ask the current regime in my own country (more oil-patch fundamentalists, bottom-line feeders, makes me kind of queasy to listen to their rhetoric echoing their southern cousins) questions about why we\'re in Afghanistan, mopping up after B/C/R\'s failed attempt on Osama bin Laden, and get some more resources directed to our own health care, education & infrastructure, too. Oh and by the way, I do ask those questions, in editorial letters and questions to MPs and Ministers. It\'s my duty as a citizen of a democratic nation to do so.

Funny thing, I always thought it the duty of citizens of your Republic to do so too. Lately though, I\'ve seen an awful lot of people expressing their opinions being tromped on as "unpatriotic" by people who simply have a different set of opinions.

That constructive enough? specific enough?

All IMO. Nobody need agree with my personal views, even if I think it would be nice if more people did...

trust me the subpoenas will start rolling out very soon (im sure you have a tub of lotion and a box of kleenex at the ready) and i hope its discovered that saddam did in fact have weapons and that the 14 month period we wasted at the united nations making the case caused the saddam regime enough time to move em elsewhere so americans can finally realise the UN is a worthless body and we may finally tell these thirld world thugs to pack their shit and go home. old folkie why do you feel its someone elses responsibility to pay for your healthcare? and why stop there? why not we all get free food, free cars, free gas for said cars, free pot, free housing, free internet, etc etc seriously man get a real job and pay for your own health care.

Saddam will be found not to have had any WMD because (a) Daddy Bush bombed them out and (b) the UN inspectors (who are not as incompetent as you apparently believe, and were provided by countries all over the "first world") verified over and over that they didn\'t exist. The same could not be said for the USA, France, China, etc...where WMD abound.

Clearly. someone has missed the lesson that nothing is ever solved by fighting. It is only when the fighters stop for the breath and either start talking themselves or let the talkers take on the serious work that anything gets resolved. I for one am tired of playground politics. Enough of Sun-Tzu and Machiavelli -- we need to learn to tell when politicians are selling us a line to keep us off-balance enough to control us. Cries of "WMD" and "terrorism" have done too good a job of that, with nothing to substantiate them.

The UN has serious flaws. No thinking person can deny this. However, it\'s a good concept, and it\'s the best we have right now. I\'m guessing that many of the "third world thugs" are dead scared of even being in NYC among the USA\'s "first world" thugs, and would be quite pleased to see the UN headquarters moved to some less volatile environment. Remember the statistics that said many soldiers from inner cities were actually safer in Iraq? How about we work to improve the UN, actually try to fix what\'s broken? Sure, move it out of the USA, since the administration doesn\'t want to pay their dues anyway.

Quoteold folkie why do you feel its someone elses responsibility to pay for your healthcare? and why stop there? why not we all get free food, free cars, free gas for said cars, free pot, free housing, free internet, etc etc seriously man get a real job and pay for your own health care.

LOL, phartacus, you really don\'t get it, do you? I pay for my healthcare, and have done so for the 30 years I\'ve been working, and I help pay for my fellow citizens who can\'t. I, and everyone else who works here, undertake a social contract that says it is for the public good to provide basic healthcare, education, infrastructure, for everyone in the country. We are not so tax-shy that we don\'t recognize something when it is truly in the public good.

I feel sorry for you phartacus. Maybe you should go and find a nice fascist dictatorship to live in. I don\'t believe the one you\'ve been living in is going to last much longer. It seems to have taken "quite a thumping" last Tuesday.

This is so elementary that it stupefies when people misrepresent the point. It is as if we can't take a lesson from the past. Think vaccine. Think emergency room care. How many times have you heard the terms early diagnosis, preventative medicine, etc. etc...? These are all methods of holding the costs down. Something the companies who provide the care and the money management don\'t particularly want.

Ah, I see. I erred in using your own words in my response to you, and picking up the label "thugs". Actually, that\'s a trap, one I need to be more careful about stepping into in future. As far as I\'m aware, we\'re all "people". That\'s the only label I need, thanks. If we see that we\'re all pretty much alike, there\'s a lot less reason to hate, fear and fight. And by extension, a lot more reason to care about each other, and look after each other. What goes around, comes around.

i\'m not going to get involved in your negativity, but i will toss this one thought your way.  the phrase quoted above is rather meaningless.

while Michael Bloomberg was a Democrat most of his life, he is Mayor under the Republican banner due to internal party issues he had.  prior to that, for 5 years, NYC was governed under another Repubican, Rudy Giuliani.  in fact, it has only had 4 other Republican mayors that i know of, and most of those were fairly liberal as well.  it has pretty much always been run by liberals - the only difference among them was their degree of liberalism.

i didnt try to trap you into anything I just call em as i see em and these tin pot dictators are thugs pure and simple. It\'s funny though cause in one post you admit there are fascist dictators in the world and then in the same thread say that "were all people and thats the only label you need". But as far as the UN goes there are over 100 member nations But the US foots something like 90% of the bill and what do we (americans) get for it? We get THUGS like Kruschev banging his fist on the podium saying they (the soviets) will bury our children, We get Hugo Chavez calling our president satan, we get rapes by UN "peacekeepers" in the congo i mean the list of UN bullshit is endless and I for one think its high time we (america) stop using this worthless group of nitwits to try and solve world issues. I realize we are all just people unfortunately some of these "people" are just plain evil and i fear that pacifists who have this unwillingness to recognize evil will someday be in charge.

i am curious and amused by the fact that you frequently call me negative, at times even going so far as to say you think i am the most negative person on the board, and yet you single me out from the very start as the person you most want to hear from.  that just seems silly...

if i thought that i had the very specific answers to those questions that you seem to think i have, i would be trying to reach those best able to implement them.  as it is, i am simply glad to know that the country is taking the first steps toward setting right that which has become an intolerable debacle.

it will take time, it will take work, and solutions for problems so complex will not come to you in a random sound bite on a thread in a musician\'s political forum.  you don\'t really want my opinion, so why should i bother to articulate further than that?

This isn\'t directed at anyone in particular, so please don\'t flame me.  This is just my understanding of things.  And I don\'t claim to be a scholar at all! LOL!
As far as the UN goes, the world is made up of many countries.  And it is in everyone\'s best interests to go before the UN to deal with problems in the world.  I think part of the problem that has been had with the UN lies in the fact that our leaders have thought they were somehow above the UN.  Because, just as the UN says the US can\'t invade Somewhere, they also say Somewhere cannot invade the US.
I just don\'t understand why some people have a problem with the Republican/Democrat labels.  My husband and I are Democrats, I guess. *shrug* Though, if a Republican candidate is the best one, we\'ll vote for them.  We are pretty liberal people though not the most liberal we know. Now, a couple we are very close with are Republicans.  And I mean serious Republicans.  But they\'re good people, loyal friends, and we made them our son\'s godparents.  So, I don\'t have a problem with anyone\'s political beliefs.  And I don\'t think anyone here does either.  I just don\'t want to get flamed.
And, before anyone asks, we were very happy with the election results!  LOL!  And, no I don\'t have any answers for the current issues facing our elected officials.  If I had ideas of how to fix things, I guess I would have run for office.  So, it will take one or many far more intelligent than I to come up with solutions! I can only hope there ARE solutions at this point!
There\'s my two cents, I guess!
