Title: Orchids, Dahlias and Yard Ornaments...
Post by: Duckhead on May 19, 2009, 03:58:08 AM
Getting ready to head to Cali for 2 weeks tomorrow to celebrate our daughters 3rd birthday. We will be in the high desert near Victorville for a few days to visit the in-laws, then head to San Juan Capistrano for a week to hang at the beach, go surfing and see friends, then down to the San Diego area to see my sister and have a family reunion bbq before we come back home. I hate driving in southern Cal but it will be great to see people. Until next time, a hui hou!

ps - check out the luggage tag I made for my new suitcase.

Bought Forensic Follies near 2 weeks ago and it is still sealed in the wrapper ontop of my stereo, I\'ll probably have a listen over the weeknd.  Lately I have been busy with lots of yard work. We spend alot of time outside and enjoy our little piece of paradise. Here are some pics of our yard:

I see your taste in lawn ornaments is better than mine.  I really like that skull laying in the pot.  I\'m glad you had a nice trip.

yeah, I love that skull. It is made of concrete. A while back some dude at the swap meet made and sold them. I keep hoping he will come back because I would like to get a second one.

OK - we have lots of cool stuff in bloom in our yard this time of year so I thought I would share:

Here is my little Dahlia garden, it just went into full bloom about 2 weeks ago:

ORCHIDS

My fembot and I have a commom intrest in growing orchids, we have a couple hundred or more. I get them at yard sales, flower shows, as gifts and we collect from abandonned yards and from the wild (with permission). It is truley like treasure hunting for us.

(http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee273/yalcab/DSCN0243.jpg) we always rotate what is in bloom on our front steps

(http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee273/yalcab/DSCN0241.jpg) this is on the way to our front steps

(http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee273/yalcab/DSCN0240.jpg) this is about 8 inches across

(http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee273/yalcab/DSCN0272.jpg) this is an awesome one

(http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee273/yalcab/DSCN0273.jpg) more of your basic orchid

(http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee273/yalcab/DSCN0246.jpg) this picture isn\'t the best but you can see that there is no dirt, it has air roots (same with the next one)

this is a picture of the orchid transplant station:

this is a kula gardenia and has a great smell, it starts off white then it turns to yellow then almost orange:

red plumeria:

these dolphins are carved from styrofoam and covered with sand found from different beaches on this island, my friend made it:

I know I posted a pic of the torch ginger before but I love these things, this one is about 10 inches tall

Holy green thumb Batman!

I was thinking about getting an orchid.  I haven\'t yet cuz I\'m afraid to spend $30 on a plant that I may kill in a matter of weeks.  Maybe one of these days I\'ll just go for it and see what happens.

I just killed an orchid so I appreciate these pics.  Keep them coming.  And I love the luggage tag!  I am attempting to create a Buckethead scarf to crochet.  Wish me luck!

QuoteHoly green thumb Batman!

You don\'t need a green thumb in Hawaii, things grow with or without help. I rarely spend more than $5 on a orchid but hey, I live in right in the middle of the Orchid industry. You can always find great big orchids in bloom at costco or walmart and they are rarely more than $14.99, but I goto the farmers market and buy ones not in bloom for a couple bucks each and then just put them in the yard and wait for the suprise.

I\'ll take a few more pics and post them in the next couple days.
