Since some of us are new to TDRS\' work, why don\'t some of you other members start a thread and tell us which other artists are your favorites & why--we\'d love to know. :)

The best recommendation I could make would be that people should look carefully and thoroughly at the site and the major thrust of the threads previously posted.
Buckethead, a Travis & Buckethead collaborative duo Thanatopsis, Cornbugs, Vince DiCola, Travis\' brother Lindy, and various others... generally all engineered by Travis, and most with his keyboard talents on display as well. Travis is a wonderful musician and engineer.
Most of the people you run into here are either musicians &/or into Travis\' work, or the works of other musicians on the site. Every once in a while someone comes here because of Viggo, but it isn\'t a Viggo fan site type of place and i think most of them find it boring.
This site is generally about music, Viggo\'s included... although we have been know to get into political debates - but i see politics and civil liberties as intrinsically tied to music and all other arts. Yes, Travis, i know it\'s usually my fault, mea culpa babe! :-*
I have to say that zuzu\'s got a very strong point on the website issue... you get 6370 hits if you enter "Travis Dickerson Studio" - and only one of them is an actual site devoted to his work, this one. The rest are mentions of him and his studio. Viggo gets 748,000 hits and god only knows how many of those are fan sites with gobs of photos and sitings and gossip and speculation about his personal life, his past and upcoming movies and all that wonderful fame related folderol.

I have been following this thread for a little while hoping not to say anything but I feel I should at least make my philosophy clear. I started this site as a place to talk about the artists I record with. I have always let the discussion go where ever it wanted and for the most part been delighted with the caliber of those discussions. I think gkg said it very well and it\'s an old rule when you go into a new forum to look around to soak up the atmosphere of the discussions before you participate you will be more in sync with the people who are already there. I wouldn\'t want to walk into a large gathering of people and start spouting off about getting plastered last night to find out you where at a gathering of Mothers against Drunk Driving. Now I must say nothing like that is going on now, those that have come here as fans of Viggo\'s seem to get that this is not just a Viggo fan site and have been asking questions about the connection of artist here and that\'s what this is all about. I have resisted splitting this forum into categories by artist because the mixing of these artists is a big part of what we do around here so I\'m hoping the forum can reflect that. Fan over-enthusiasm is not just confined to movie stars, I\'ve seen a bit of that related to guitar heroes as well, so go ahead and discuss what you like but I hope you will be mindful that my desire for this forum is to be a place for thoughtful discussion on art, music, politics and the merits of artists works. Both myself and I\'m sure Viggo as well appreciate having at least one place that\'s less about idolatry and more about the work.

Oh dear...I\'m sorry if I upset anyone by posting my pic of Viggo on here. It wasn\'t meant to spark off a Viggo fan discussion. I came here to learn about all the other sorts of music that I would never of heard of elsewhere. Yes I am a Viggo fan...yes I have met him...yes I even like his music too. Yet I am also interested in other stuff namely...hearing about other Artists.

I did like the pic of Viggo as well, but there\'s more than just a pretty face on any artist. I think to truly understand what the music is saying to you, is to really listen to the music and not so much the lyrics. I have to admit that I was one that listened to music just to listen to it. I never really listened to feel it. Fortunately, I was able to hear different music and enjoy it. I grew up listening to disco, country/western, salsa, cumbias, hip hop and other heavy beat or light beat music. But when I heard "pandemoniumfromamerica", it made me feel how amazing something can sound. I mean you can hear guitars and keyboards and bass guitars, drums and other instruments, but I never realized how beautiful of a sound can come from a harmonica or even a wheelchair. I mean come on a wheelchair. People might think you were off, but until you really listen to it, you can\'t understand. In some ways its like a painter who just takes his paint brush and dips it into a bucket of painter and then with one stroke on the canvass says he\'s finished. Talent isn\'t just making pretty pictures and lovely music, its becoming one with the picture and making the music apart of you.
Sorry for rattling off at the mouth like I did, I didn\'t mean to. I hope everyone will forgive me and Travis, keep up the great work and keep bringing in the great artists.

speaking of the wonderment of sound - i don\'t watch much network tv but last night i happened to switch on just for background noise... something but nothing, you know - well i chose wrong and right at the same time. wound up catching an epi of Evening Magazine - and it had Jon Brumit and Cheryl Leonard. these two are SF locals who make "music" in a "new" way.
Brumit from garbage - seriously, broken bottles, crushed cans, trash and recycle stuff. he\'s even recorded the sound of two people playing tennis, with a steak in place of the ball. (i don\'t know of a website for him, but i have an email address if someone wants to reach Brumit)
Leonard from nature - rocks, twigs, bones, leaves. she actually composes pieces around these "instruments." (http://www.allwaysnorth.com)
they each have an "orchestra" and the clip showed the two of them coming together for the first time to jam. what a bizarre cacophony! really wonderful - primal earth meets man\'s waste land.
the words in quotes: music, new, instruments and orchestra. i single out these words because naturally when we came to awareness as creatures it was exactly as tvega12004 is starting to see it, that certain sounds please or captivate us.

there was a FANTASTIC drummer on the streets in NY, used to camp across from the Chelsea - it drove me mad at 3am, but man he was fantastic. all he used was a plastic wash basin and hands or sticks, man o man was he good. for hours. and hours. still, really fantastic.
a well made instrument is a piece of art, but so is a hollowed log, in the right hands.
New York wish I could go back there :-/

yah - the no car thing is part of why i miss NY. walked everywhere. live too far from everything for no car here... and the hips/knees won\'t allow serious biking any more.

truly, it never sleeps - we lived in the Chelsea and i used to be able to have the doorman/deskclerk walk our doberman in the middle of the night... while we were out til all hours.
sigh... i really miss the place. i understand it has changed alot = but i\'d like to see for myself. like the concept of money not solving all your problems, i believe it to be true, but i\'d like a chance to prove it for myself.

I\'ve never been to New York, but I\'ve always wanted to go. I\'ve always lived in Texas, at least since birth. Never been out of here, except to Mexico to visit family. ::) But I\'ve always wanted to visit that wonderful city. I don\'t believe too much in bad stuff about it, I try to really see the beauty of it. I guess I\'m a little nieve about it. ??? What would you recommend I see when and if I ever get to visit. And you are right about money, it doesn\'t bring any happiness. But its a lot better than being without.
ah, as Maggie the Cat would say "you can be young without money or old with money, but you can\'t be old without money" - life is just too hard that way.
Texas has its charms - but i didn\'t really enjoy living there as much as NY or CA.
lets see... the touristy stuff i don\'t need to recommend. other than that - check out the Chelsea, because it\'s one of the neatest hotels/places on the planet. great art, funky atmosphere and WONDERFUL people. there are lovely little places all around, although the neighborhood has been yuppified since we left - sadly.
walk around the village naturally, but hit places like 14th street, the 26th street annex on a sunday morning... grab the Voice and see what\'s playing and doing for free around town. off off off broadway is hell-a-fun as they seem to say out here.
different people enjoy different stuff - so it\'s hard for me to say what you\'d like. i just love the place and its energy, people, architecture (the old stuff more than the new, but that\'s just me).
:D When I went to New York I was so clingy toward my friend but he said " well I gotta go to work have fun on the subway" And OH BOY did I have fun I got so lost trying to get to the lower eastside I was walking for hours and Hours, I ended up some where just oppasite near the gay part of NY near my name sake And around Christopher Park I found a wonderful Guitar Shop, now mind this was in March late march 2003 so I was toatly changed...

"the gay part of NY" - i\'m dyin\' here!! yes, christopher street is known as the gay part - so is the village to some - but honey, the city is covered with people of all stripes. we lived in chelsea. we lived in the upper west side. friends of ours lived in spanish harlem. friends lived in tribeca. no matter where we were - there were gays, blacks, hispanics, yuppies, republicans, democrats, muslims, anarchists, jews... that\'s what i loved about it - everyone was mixed together in manhattan. there are predominant strains of one thing or another in each neighborhood, sure, but i have a hard time saying one part is more gay than another... that\'s such a hard thing to be sure of.
when most people look at me (unless i am with max) they usually don\'t think lesbian. with max, well, we\'ve been lovers for nearly 30 years now, and partners for over 20... we fit like old married people do, you know?

But then reality set in and a long story to boot, he then decided to be up front with me about his preference. The best part of NYC is that something is always going on somewhere. You can spend the day just looking at people and smelling the air. Each neighborhood has its own aura. 5th Ave around the Plaza is upscale (if you like Gucci, Ferragamo glam and Bloomies) Tea cost you a few !00. But then you go to chinatown by Canal and you\'re buying from tiny shops and smelling the fish in the trash. 6 sesame rolls are 2.50 and they\'re great. You can spend hours walking along the East River (bring you to tears if you\'re with my husband and he won\'t stop--never heard the word taxi) and sometimes, sometimes you get to see someone you think you know darting in and out of the people on the sidewalk who are walking too slowly for him...and you go whoa was that? but you know, the Cat\'s gone before you can speak...
Former NYer here, lived in the city for 6 years. Too many great things to list about it, as well as too many not so great things. Used to go to a place in the West Village, above Alphabet Ciyt, called the Cellar- great open mic nights for poets or musicians, or just to find some intelligent people to debate the philosphy of life, amung other amusing things. 8)
Now I live in Phoenix, been here for 8 years now. Can\'t find any place with that kind of culture here. :\'(
Mostly local music, not that that is bad, but more of a coffee house culture here. What I would give to get a night of poetry reading here. :-[
Quality of life is better here than NYC, but there are many things I miss. You can take the girl out of the city, but never the city out of the girl. ;D

I have found a few, actually through a Reniassance Recreation group - SCA. Ever heard of them? Great camp outs. ;D Poets are "bards" etc.
Been talking with a girlfriend of mine in southern CA about going to Burning Man, but my husband is resistent to the totally OPEN atmsphere. :o But I am working on him! ::)
By quality of life I am referring more to, is the cost of living and the housing standard. $$ go a long way in AZ.

in the SF area money doesn\'t make it to the end of the block, let alone "a long way." then again, money has never had anything to do with my quality of life, just with the quality of abode etc. the less money i can live on, the less i need the corporate job - as soon as we have all the bills from the past 4 years paid off, and they nearly are, i\'m gonna try to move out of the corporate world all together. our kids are adults now, time for us to have our 2nd youth.
Actully we are OINK\'s - One Income No Kids. (as opposed to DINK\'s - double income no kids) My husband is currently in VT, finihing his Bachelore - at 35 no less! Had his midlife crisis early and has finally decided what he wants to do when he grows up... ::)
So I suddly have all this time to myself with which to pursue and enjoy a whole host of things I would otherwise not have time for!
Working on my own personal renaissance.......
